Dolphins

Over a dozen species of dolphin live in the waters in and around Sri Lanka, dancing spinner is being the most popular among all dolphins due to their active lifestyle. Dolphin diet mostly consist of smaller fish. Most dolphin species live in pods. For some species, only ten or twelve individuals may live together, but some species swim in groups of several hundred. Dolphin pods tend to be matrilineal, consisting of a female and her close relatives. The many diverse species of dolphins mean that they live can be found in most waters. Some prefer deeper parts of the sea, while others are shallow water animals. Some dolphin species prefer cold water, but many love the warm waters near the island. Some dolphins are very shy about people, but others joyfully play with boats full of humans.

Kalpitiya and Trincomalee are the one of the best spots for dolphin watching in Sri Lanka. Here you can witness massive pods of dolphins, even thousands in their natural habitat. The seas off Kalpitiya Peninsula became famous for large pods of Spinner dolphins were spotted.
